EL AYRE ESPAÑOL:

Rhythm in Recitative for baroque music-drama

Although the terms recitado and ayre appear in period sources, their usage does not correspond to our modern understanding of Recitative and Aria. Not only has their meaning changed over the centuries, but Spanish theatrical music differs from both Italian genere rappresentativo and Lully's French model. In response to the fundamental challenge of music-drama - representing speech on stage as music - Iberian composers eschewed any binary distinction in favour of a rich spectrum of subtly distinct textures, structured by characteristic Hispanic rhythms.

Katerina Antonenko

CELOS, AUN DEL AYRE, MATAN:

famous, but almost unknown, Spanish opera.

"Celos" (now in repertoire in Russia as Любовь убивает - "Love Kills") devised by the magnificent creative partnership of Juan Hidalgo de Polanco and Pedro Calderón de la Barca, is celebrated as 'the first Spanish opera'. Nevertheless it resists classification into modern categories, suffers a reputation amongst musicians and dramaturgs of being "impossible to perform", and has been much misunderstood by academic writers.  It is best approached as an art-work sui generis, mutilayered and complex in its music and poetry alike. The challenge for the first production in Russia is to translate the untranslatable, to understand the incomprehensible, and to represent the impossible!

Celos, aun del aire, matan - Любовь убивает - will  be performed at Theatre Natalya Sats on 22nd & 23rd March, with an open rehearsal on the International Day of Early Music, 21st March.
